Timothy Lee Herl, age 64, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in Lawrence, Kansas. He was born on September 25, 1961, in Topeka, Kansas, to James and Barbara (Lewis) Herl, who preceded him in death.
Tim was raised in Topeka and graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in 1980. He went on to attend Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he played baseball. On September 12, 1986, Tim married Susan Kay McCluskey.
Throughout his working life, Tim held several positions, but none brought him greater pride or satisfaction than his career as an over-the-road truck driver. He valued the solitude, freedom, and ever-changing scenery of life on the road. One of his greatest professional accomplishments was reaching the million-mile mark with YRC.
Tim had many interests and was never hesitant to share them. He enjoyed golfing and often said he enjoyed fishing as well—though, notably, no one could ever confirm an actual catch. A devoted sports fan, Tim followed the Kansas City Royals during baseball season, cheered on the Kansas City Chiefs throughout football season, and proudly supported KU basketball.
Known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, Tim had a knack for inserting himself into conversations—invited or not—regardless of the topic or his level of expertise. His goal was almost always the same: to get a laugh, and he usually succeeded. He also enjoyed listening to SiriusXM, especially political programming and sports talk, and could often be found tuned in, forming opinions he was more than happy to share.
Tim is survived by his son, Tyler Herl (Chelsea), and his grandchildren, Kane and Charlie Herl, all of Basehor, Kansas. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Herl (Kathy), of Sabetha, Kansas; his niece, Kayla; and his nephew, Adam.
In accordance with Tim’s wishes, he was cremated. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home in Topeka, Kansas.
