Refugio S. Perez, 95, of Topeka, passed away on May 15, 2022, at the home of his son.
He was born in Topeka, Kansas on July 2, 1926, the son of Ventura and Santos (Salinas) Perez.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
His began his work career with the Railroad both in Kansas City and Topeka. He moved to
Emporia where he worked at Emporia State College and at the City Auditorium. When he returned to Topeka, he worked at Lake Shawnee, the City Auditorium which is now TPAC, and retired as a Custodian for Washburn University.
He enjoyed watching baseball especially his favorite team the New York Yankee’s. He also enjoyed watching other sports and his favorite basketball team was North Carolina. Refugio liked to do word search puzzles. Refugio attended the LULAC Center for many years enjoying their trips and especially going to the Casino.
Refugio married Frances F. Gutierrez in 1957 in Kansas City, Missouri. She predeceased him on August 30, 2006. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ramirez and two grandchildren, Richard Bennett and Sherry Allen.
He is survived by six children, Rita of Kansas City, Anita Pond of San Diego, CA, Edward (Michele) Perez of Topeka, Mary Allen of Arlington, TX, Clara (Bernardo) Ortega of Emporia, Guillermo (Kim)
Cruz of Wichita, 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
He will lie in state at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Friday, June 3, 2022, from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M., with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
