Ramon Rojas Montes

July 29, 1937 — October 30, 2025

Topeka

Ramon Rojas Montes, 88, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 29, 1937, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Valeriano and Carmen (Rojas) Montes. Raymond married Shirley June Henderson Chavez in 1960 in Topeka, and together they raised two beautiful daughters before later parting ways.

Ramon was immensely proud of his work with the Kansas Department of Corrections at the State Reception and Diagnostic Center, where he served honorably as a First Sergeant. His strong sense of integrity, discipline, and leadership earned him the respect of his colleagues and all who knew him.

A lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Ramon lived a life rooted in faith, family, and service. Outside of work, he enjoyed an active lifestyle boxing, playing tennis, dancing to all kinds of music, and spending time outdoors. He was an avid animal lover, a passionate supporter of Native American charities, and loved listening to live jazz at Poor Richards.

Known for his sharp sense of style and love of nice cars, Ramon carried himself with pride and confidence. He never met a stranger, his warm personality and easy smile made everyone feel welcome. Whether he was playing horseshoes, sharing stories, or simply enjoying good company, he had a gift for bringing people together.

Ramon graduated from Topeka High School and attended the University of Kansas.

He is survived by his daughters, Crystal Montes and Michelle Montes (David Conboy); grandchildren, Kaila Cargill (Justin), Sarah Lucero, and Quinton Alexander; great-grandchildren, Colten Cargill (Abbie), Cash Cargill, and Serena Lucero; and great-great-granddaughter, Paizlynn Cargill. He is also survived by many loving extended family members and close nieces and nephews, who affectionately knew him as “Uncle Monie.”

He was preceded in death by his parents and sixteen siblings.
