Odelia "Dee" Mick

Odelia “Dee” Mick, Topeka, 104, passed away on December 6, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. 

She was born December 27, 1913, in Topeka, Kansas, to Ignatius and Barbara (Schmidtberger) Haberkorn.  When Dee was four years old, after the death of her mother in childbirth, she and her younger sister, Katherine “Kay” Haberkorn, went to live with her grandparents in Victoria, Kansas.  She attended 1st grade in Victoria at Saint Fidelis School, then 2nd through 6th grade at Saint Joseph Grade School in Topeka and later Topeka Public Middle School and Topeka High School.  A sewing class in school taught her a skill which led her to become a seamstress.  Her vestments have quality and faith sewn into every stitch, and have been worn by many generations of Topeka’s parish priests. 

She was an active member of Holy Name Parish for over half a century.  Her contributions included singing in the choir, lector, eucharistic minister, and sacristan.  She began the Holy Name Church Bazaar in 1972 and chaired it for ten years.  Dee made 350 bags of noodles for the Bazaar Noodle Booth annually.   Dee took great pride in arranging flower displays for the church and caring for it in all aspects.  She received the Mater Dei (Holy Name) Parish Annual Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.  Dee was also presented a plaque for Years of Service from the Holy Name Altar Society.

Dee worked for Halls Printing Company in the lithographing department making wedding invitations.  She worked in the card department for the F. W. Woolworth Company.  She made belts and buttonholes for the Sewing Nook.

A Daughter of Isabella for over 50 years, Dee served as Past Regent and Chancellor 10 years where she led the rosaries for deceased members.  She was Topeka District Treasurer of the ACCW 25 years.  She is an Associate Member of the Sisters of Charity, Leavenworth, KS.

Odelia married Floyd Raymond Mick on September 13, 1934, at Saint Joseph Church, Topeka, KS.  Floyd preceded her in death December 5, 1972.  She is also preceded in death by her parents, one stepson, James Charles Mick, one brother Daniel Haberkorn, and six sisters, Catherine “Kay” Dluhy, Mary Haberkorn, Louise Schreiber, Alvina Haberkorn, Leona Schoenfeldt, and Elizabeth “Betty” Broxterman.

She is survived by her daughter, Marylee Welch Hamilton, Topeka, KS, and her son, John Raymond Mick Sr. Alpine, Arizona; seven grandchildren, John R. Mick Jr., Sharon Mick, Allison Mick, Julie Colvin, Barbara Turner, Mary Krestas, James Herrick and nine great grandchildren, Kalista Mick, Aurora Mick, Odelia Colvin, Collette Colvin, Laura Turner, Madeline Turner, Lily Turner, Isobel Krestas and Markis Krestas.  Odelia is survived by a brother, Robert Haberkorn (Peggy), Topeka, Ks., numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 12th, at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  The Daughters of Isabella will pray the rosary at 4:30 p.m., the Parish Rosary at 7:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Mater Dei Holy Name Parish.  Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
