Michael “Mike” Patrick Mayo, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.
He was born the son of Michael and Jean (Stewart) Mayo on June 24, 1954, in Topeka, Kansas. Following his post-secondary education, Mike built a career as an Electronics Technician, where he worked on machinery for the United States Postal Service. After his first retirement, Mike was sweet talked in coming back to work, retired, and was again called to work. He will be remembered and missed by his work family as, “Mad Dog.” His dedication to his work, spanning over 20 years, created lifelong friendships among his colleagues.
On September 23, 1987, Mike married his best friend and beloved wife, Sandra Joy Nelson, at First Lutheran Church in Topeka. Together they shared more than 31 years of marriage before Sandra’s passing on June 16, 2019.
In his younger years, Mike was an accomplished drummer and carried a deep love for music. Throughout his adult life, he was also a dedicated and active participant in AA, offering strength, encouragement, and fellowship to many. Mike enjoyed spending time outdoors and was especially fond of target practice.
Above all, Mike cherished time with his family. His children and adoring grandchildren were the center of his world, and the moments spent together brought him his greatest joy
Survivors include his son, Chris Mayo; two daughters, Danielle Mayo and Elizabeth Mayo. Mike also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Alaina Avila, Hadlie Sova, Evan Mayo, and Tyler Kitchengs; as well as one sister, Kathleen McAferty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandra Joy Nelson-Mayo; and two sisters, Pamela Mayo and Rosemary Mayo.
