Mary Conception “Chita” Mosquera, 97, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 4, 2026, at Midland Hospice House.
She was born on July 2, 1928, in Topeka, the daughter of Francisco V. and Mary (Villafranco) Vargas. Mary grew up in Topeka and attended Hayden High School, graduating in 1947. She was a member of National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, and was nominated May Queen. Mary furthered her education by attending Clark’s Business School.
Mary moved to California in 1961 and worked for the California Teachers Association, as an administrative assistant until her retirement. She then went to work at Chevron, holding the same position.
She married Oswaldo Mosquera on November 10, 1966, in California. They celebrated 37 years together. Mary and Oswaldo moved back to Topeka in 1994, and he passed in 2004.
Mary enjoyed watching CNN, novellas, attending the theater, and going to the casino. Her faith was very important to her and she was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. She loved spending time with family and demonstrated that by being a caregiver for several of them.
Survivors include a sister, Rose Ramos of Topeka; sister-in-law, Linda Vargas; and many nieces; nephews; and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Francisco V. Vargas Jr. and Anthony Vargas Sr.; sisters, Stella Vargas Florez and Mary Alice Dominguez; brothers-in-law, Steven Dominguez and Raymond Florez.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 10, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, with a rosary prayed at 7:00pm, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, May 11, at 10:00am, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery- Topeka.
