Marie Margueritte Carter

Marie Margueritte Carter, 93, of Topeka, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026, at Celebration Villa.

She was born April 3, 1932, in Vendoevre, France, to Henrie and Andre (Caperelle) Matinier. She grew up and attended high school in Paris, as well as working at the Waterman Pen Factory.

Marie met Ulysses Carter during his time in the military while he was stationed in Evreux, France. They later married in Paris and were together until his passing in 2003.

She was a devoted catholic and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Marie enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, making the pilgrimage to Medjugorje in Bosnia with the church, and traveling to France to visit friends and family. She especially loved her family and taking care of her dogs.

Marie worked as a seamstress for several clothing stores in Topeka, including Ray Beers, Crosby’s Department Store, Macy’s, and Dillards.

She is survived by her son, Emmanuel Carter (Karen Hastert) of Topeka; nieces, Kim Hutchins and Kelly Hutchins of Marseille, France.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Josef Matinier, Bernadette Hutchins, and Henrie Matinier.

The family will receive friends from 9:00am to 10:00am, Tuesday, March 17, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00am, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 227 SW Van Buren St, Topeka, KS 66603. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
