Marcell J. “Bud” Mosher, age 89, of Topeka, KS, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in Topeka.
Bud was born the son of Marcell F. and Colette Rose (Heptig) Mosher on August 5, 1936, in Topeka. He was proud 1954 graduate from Hayden Catholic High School where he excelled is sports, especially in football. Bud remained a loyal fan of Hayden athletics throughout his life. Following graduation, Bud attended Washburn University, where he played on the Tennis team.
On May 5, 1956, Bud married his beloved sweetheart, Lillian M. Mulvihill at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Perry. With great love and support, together, Bud and Lillian created a beautiful union and sharing nearly 70 years of marriage.
Full of spark and determination, Bud lived a life that never sat idle. His love for all sports encompassed his life long after high school as he supported high school athletics as a referee, officiating local games and continued refereeing under the direction of KSHSAA. His travels with high school sports brought a passion within Bud and no one would be lost traveling the plains of Kansas. His keen sense of direction and the use of a trusty Atlas and paper maps was his well-known skill. Even when he was not present, a phone call to Bud and a destination to explore, he knew the correct route and secrets of the travels. When his kids started participating in sports, Bud played the role of coach whether it be in basketball, baseball, or football. Supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was Bud’s biggest passion. Following closely, was his love for the game of golf. When free time was presented, Bud would hit the golf course and whether he shot over or under, it was always a good day on the course. A day of fishing or a family hunting trip, Bud loved spending time outdoors.
Bud’s loyalty continued as his working career spanned nearly 35 years with the Sante Fe Railroad. His hard work ethic was evident as he worked in various roles but found his calling as an accountant. Retirement wasn’t for Bud, so he helped with his son’s construction business and after several years, he joined the staff at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. His calm, approachable, demeanor was evident as he was a guiding hand supporting not only the staff but the families experiencing the hardships of a death. For over 20 years, Bud was a loyal employee, coworker and friend to all.
The devotion to family continued as Bud and Lillian shared countless memories and experiences. They both enjoyed road trips in the car and at times, they shared train rides to various destinations. Together, they created a life filled with endless love for family, companionship, and partnership.
His Catholic faith never wavered as he was an active member with Christ the King Catholic Church throughout his life. He and Lillian were founding members and Bud served in various capacities as an Usher, serving on the church finance board, attending Perpetual Adoration, and a longtime member as a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council #8411 member.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Mosher; son, Mike Mosher (Karla); son, Mark Mosher; daughter, Diane Kimsey (Lewis); and son, Greg Mosher (Holly). Bud leaves behind six grandchildren, Shawn Mosher (Sarah), Jennifer Stroup (Nick), Margaret “Molly” Kimsey (fiancé, Sean Kohl), Hudson Mosher, Graham Mosher, Mia Mosher; as well as two step-grandchildren, Craig Mosqueda (Leah), and Nicole Frank (Andy). Always dear to his heart were his great-grandchildren, Keely Mosher, Harper Stroup, Caden Mosher, Parker Stroup; and step great-grandchildren, Anna & Jackson Mosqueda, Ainsley, Josephine & EmmyLou Frank. He also leaves behind numerous friends including his coffee crew, fellow parishioners at Christ the King, and golf course friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Donna Mulvihill and Kay Garwood; one brother, Floyd Mosher; and daughter-in-law, Trina Mosher.
Bud will lie in state on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 9-10:00 A.M., with a Christ the King Catholic Church-Knights of Columbus Council #8411 led rosary being prayed at 10:00 A.M., at Christ the King Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
