John P. Gartner

John P. Gartner, age 83, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023, at the Midland Hospice House.

He was born the son of Joseph A. and Rose M. (Stritzinger) Gartner on June 12, 1940, in Topeka, KS. John attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Hayden High School in 1958. He enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after three years in the service.

Upon returning from the service, John was a hard worker, and he began his career in construction for various individuals in Topeka. He worked mainly for Gartner Brothers Construction, building residential homes and a few commercial entities. On the side, John along with his brothers, ran a small farming operation that he truly loved. He enjoyed attending auctions, vegetable gardening, and tinkering with small projects. He was an excellent welder and used his creativity to weld different yard art ornaments.

John was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish and remained involved as an Usher, helped with Collections, and was always honored to make any repairs needed at the church.

Survivors include his sister, Margaret L. Gartner; brother, Michael A. Gartner; three beloved cousins, Nancy Wilkinson (Mike Ryan), Lisa Hill, and Gina Wilkinson (Luis Sanchez). Other survivors include many beloved cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jospeh E. Gartner; and his aunt, Mary E. (Stritzinger) Wilkinson.

Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 A.M., on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 10:00 A.M., at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made in John's memory to Sacred Heart-St. Joseph Catholic Parish. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
