Joe L. Polk, 89, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Oak Creek Senior Living in Topeka.
Joe was born in 1937, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, the son of John and Purlia Ford. He spent his early years in Tennessee before moving to Topeka. He worked a variety of jobs before beginning his career with Jayhawk Masonry Company as a mason tender in 1963. He also worked for Midwest Foundations starting in 1980. Joe retired from construction in June 1997 but remained a daily presence at the company taking care of the girls, the office and the grounds.
Joe is survived by many nieces and nephews, the Merillat family and his work family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Dock, Jack and Ben; sisters Mary Frances, Jennie Mae and his twin Vernell.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents at Oak Creek Senior Living for their care and friendship the past six years and St Croix Hospice for their exceptional care the past few months.
A celebration of Joe’s life will take place from 2-4:00 P.M., on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
