Janice Darlene Steinbock

Janice Darlene Steinbock, 86, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

She was born July 25, 1939, in Holton, Kansas, to William Cornelius Coleman and Thelma Irene (Myers) Coleman.

Janice attended schools in Topeka and graduated from Seaman High School in 1957.

She married Vincent Joseph Steinbock on October 15, 1960, in Topeka. They celebrated 44 years together, before his passing in 2005.

Janice worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone and then owned Steinbock Thriftway in Oakland with her husband.

She was a quiet, kind presence who made everyone who walked into the family grocery store feel seen and valued. Whether it was a warm smile, a gentle word, or simply the way she listened, she had a gift for making customers, neighbors, friends, and family feel special. Her kindness will be remembered by all who knew her.

She especially loved taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she also enjoyed watching NASCAR.

Janice was a dedicated parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. For nearly five decades she faithfully helped behind the scenes at the annual Germanfest, and multiple other activities and fundraisers.

Survivors include her children, Cathy Kinder and husband Kim, Lisa Steinbock, Julie Akers and husband Jeff, Sheri Steinbock, Jana Zwiesler and husband John, Joey Steinbock all of Topeka; a sister, Marcia Lindsey of Castroville, Texas; grandchildren, Megan, Camri, Brianna, Zach, Taylor, Ryan, Kyle, Jenna, Tanner, Connor, Cooper, Jameson; 17 great grandchildren; and many other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

A visitation with the family will be 5:00pm-7:00pm, Tuesday, August 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a rosary prayed at 6:30pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am, Wednesday, August 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with interment following at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.

Memorial contributions should be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Midland Hospice Care, sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave. Topeka, KS 66603.
