James H. Witherell

James H. Witherell, age 77, of Topeka, KS, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in Topeka.

He was born the son of Harry E. and Shirley F. (Sleight) Witherell on July 8, 1947, in Lansing, MI. After receiving his bachelor’s in education, James proudly joined the United States Air Force and began his 24-year long career. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1993, serving in Financial Management and Services. James finished his career with the United States Postal Service.

On May 17, 1975, James married his sweetheart, Elizabeth Ann “Lizzy” Adame at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Together, they shared 45 years of marriage before Lizzy’s passing on November 4, 2020.

James loved his military career, and you could often find him reading books on history and on the military. He enjoyed watching his tv shows at home with his dog Tux. Although he was quite in nature, James enjoyed socializing with his closest friends and family. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his cherished son, Michael Witherell; 4 grandchildren, Achilles, Ragnar, Mars & Athena Witherell. Other survivors include his brother, Jeff Witherell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lizzy; and brother, John Witherell.

Memorial visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 A.M., followed by a rosary being prayed at 10:30 A.M., on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M., at the church.

Inurnment with full military honors will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
