Hugh McK. Jones III 1950-2024

Hugh was born Nov. 20, 1950, to Hugh McK. Jones, Jr. and Elizabeth Mowbray Jones of Guilford, Connecticut.

Hugh was a very genuine, gentle and always a universally considerate and courteous man who appreciated all those around him.

He resided in Topeka, Kansas for many years at The Homestead and Thornton Place. If anyone needed encouragement, or someone to brighten one’s day, Hugh was the remedy.

Hugh had the uncanny ability to draw accurate maps from memory complete with the state borders, capitols, and highways. His memory for facts was the envy of many. Hugh loved meteorology all of his life. His forecasts were often more accurate than the ones on TV. Friends and neighbors would seek him out for his weather forecasts.

He was the grandson of well-known painter and muralist, H. Siddons Mowbray. Hugh continued the family tradition of painting using his wonderful sense of color and style. Hugh is preceded in death by his father, Hugh McK. Jones, Jr. and his mother Elizabeth Mowbray Jones, by stepmother/aunt Margaret Twichell Mowbray Jones, and his beloved wives, Lindsay Swift (1989-2013) and Marcia Tennant (2016-2023.) He is survived by his sisters Casey Luria of Redmond, Washington, Terry J. Eddy of Niantic, Connecticut and brother Tim Jones (Beth) of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his stepbrother, Burton T. Mowbray (Rebecca) of Stuart, Florida and stepsister, Katharine Mowbray Michie of West Boylston, Massachusetts.

The family wishes to thank Craig R. McKinney, Hugh’s conservator of many years, who looked after his best interests and helped him in countless ways with compassion and patience well beyond those assigned by the court.

Cremation has taken place. Hugh will be laid to rest with in Connecticut.
