Esperanza "Hope" Cuevas

August 29, 1927 — February 19, 2026

Topeka

Esperanza “Hope” Cuevas, age 98, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Oakley Place of Topeka.

She was born to Pedro Barrón and Hilaria Santacruz on August 29, 1927, in San Francisco del Rincón, Guanajuato, Mexico. On November 18, 1950, Hope united in Holy Matrimony with her beloved husband, Jose M. “Joe” Cuevas, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Their marriage was deeply rooted in the sacrament they shared, and together they built a beautiful family grounded in faith, devotion, and enduring love. After 67 years of marriage, Joe was called home to the Lord on August 23, 2018.

Hope found great joy in sewing, needlework, crocheting, and various crafts, gifts she lovingly shared with her family. As the matriarch, her greatest vocation was raising her children and nurturing her home, which she kept immaculate, warm, and welcoming to all who entered.

Above all, Hope’s life was a testament to her unwavering Catholic faith. Her devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe was the cornerstone of her heart. She and Joe faithfully attended Perpetual Adoration, spending countless quiet hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. She generously volunteered her time with Fiesta and served her parish in many humble ways, often helping in the kitchen and wherever she was needed.

For 98 years, her steadfast faith guided her steps, strengthened her family, and reflected a life lived in loving service to God.

Survivors include her two sons, Jaime Cuevas and his wife Linda, Daniel Cuevas and his wife Linda; daughter, Gloria Johnson and her husband Jerry; as well as 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her brother, Robert Barron and his wife Barbara; and sister, Lilia Camacho.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Jose Luis Barron and Alfred Lorenzo Barron; and one sister, Cora Luna.

Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 P.M., with a rosary being prayed at 6:30 P.M., on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
