Elisa R. Mendez

Elisa R. Mendez, age 89, of Topeka, KS, passed away peacefully, Friday morning, August 7, 2026, surrounded by her loving family in Topeka.

She was born the daughter of Jesus Z. and Juanita Rodriguez on April 7, 1937, in Topeka, Kansas. Elisa was a proud Topeka High School graduate and later furthered her education, becoming certified as a Licensed Mental Health Technician. She devoted more than 35 years of her life to caring for others through her work with patients at KNI.

After graduating Topeka High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Marcus Mendez. Together, they raised their son Marcus Mendez II, and daughter Janice Mendez, prior to his passing on June 15, 1970.

Elisa had a joyful spirit and a love for music that could brighten any room. She was the life of the party. When the music started playing, it was not uncommon to find her dancing, laughing, and enjoying the company of those around her. Her warm and social personality made gatherings all the more special. Elisa also enjoyed spending time in Emporia with her longtime companion, Paul, and his family. You would often find them relaxing on the porch enjoying the weather or at a park feeding ducks.

Above all, Elisa’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured every opportunity to spend time with those she loved, whether gathered around the table playing cards, sharing stories and conversation, listening to music, or simply enjoying one another’s company. An excellent cook, Elisa lovingly opened her home to family and friends and found great happiness in preparing meals that brought everyone together. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, music, and love, and the memories created there will remain treasured by her family for years to come.

Survivors include her son, Marcus Mendez, Jr.; daughter, Janice Mendez; eight beloved grandchildren, Jessica Mendez, Matthew Cole, Marcus Mendez III, Alicia Mumford (Cordell), Andrea Mendez, Tiffany Jackson (Anthony), Felicia “Pookie” Lopez, and Michelle Lopez; as well as 12 loving great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marcus Mendez; siblings, Mary Palomo, Joe Rodriguez, Margaret Rodriguez Fajardo, Guadalupe Rodriguez; and her longtime companion of 30 plus years, Paul Gutierrez.

She will lie in state from 5-8:00 P.M., with a rosary prayed at 6:30 P.M., on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M., on Friday, August 21, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery-Topeka.
