Daniel "Dan" F. Phelps

Daniel “Dan” F. Phelps, age 81, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 28, 2026.

He was born on December 11, 1944, in Kansas City, KS, the son of Dorothea and Manuel Phelps. He moved to Topeka soon after, where he spent the rest of his life. He worked at his aunt’s grocery store and was there during the 1966 tornado.

Dan attended KU and Washburn University, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in accounting. He worked at the EMI executive office and later worked at Carlson Utilities. He was an avid bowler and was the league secretary for many years.

On October 15, 1983, Dan married Carmen Quinto and together they celebrated 42 years of marriage.

In 2017, Dan converted to the Catholic faith and was baptized. He embraced his new faith as a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He was passionate about baking, grilling, cooking, and spending time with family. As an avid sports enthusiast, Dan’s home always had a game on the television where he would be rooting for the KC Chiefs, KC Royals, KU Jayhawks, and Nascar.

He leaves behind his wife Carmen; his children, Cory (April) Phelps, Christy (Matt) Elder, Matt Phelps, Valerie (Ahren) Alcala; as well as eight beloved grandchildren; and sister, Debra Filby. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marylne (Ray) Kauffman, David Phelps; and Linda Jenks, mother of his two older children.

Dan will lie in state from 5-8:00 P.M., with a rosary prayed at 6:30 P.M., on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., on Tuesday, September 8, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2700 SE Virginia Ave., Topeka, KS 66605. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 P.M., at St. Leo Catholic Cemetery in Horton, KS.

Memorial contributions can be made in Dan's memory to Midland Hospice Care and/or St. Matthew Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
