Cecilia Madrid

Cecilia Madrid, age 70, of Topeka, KS, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 25, 2026, in Topeka.

She was born the daughter of Blas and Josefa (Abeyta) Madrid on March 25, 1956, in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

Cecilia may have been small in stature, but she had a personality that could light up an entire room. Known for her playful spirit, quick wit, and just the right amount of sass, she loved making others laugh and never missed an opportunity to joke around with those she loved most. Her sense of humor and vibrant personality were truly unforgettable.

She had a creative heart and found joy in arts and crafts, especially coloring and expressing herself through creativity. Above all else, Cecilia had a deep love for butterflies, which became a beautiful symbol of her life and spirit. Butterflies represented transformation, hope, and new beginnings, and simply seeing one would bring the brightest smile to her face. For her birthday just a few months ago, Cecilia enjoyed a special trip with her beloved son and his girlfriend, Kara, to the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, creating treasured memories surrounded by the butterflies she adored so much.

Another cherished adventure was a road trip to New Mexico, where she revisited family, memories, and the place connected to her upbringing. Cecilia will be lovingly remembered for her love of butterflies, her affection for “Godzilla,” her joking and spirited nature, and most importantly, the endless love she had for her son, James.

Survivors include her cherished son, James Tharp; three sisters, Maida (Randy) Delgado, Patricia “Patsy” (Horacio) Lopez, and Catherine Madrid. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless loved ones who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from 5-8:00 P.M., at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Wednesday, June 3, at Rochester Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made in Cecilia’s memory to the Butterfly House, 15050 Faust Park, Chesterfield, MO 63017. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
