Carol A. Gardner Greenfield, age 82, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2024.
She was born in Kansas City, MO, on April 14, 1942, the daughter of Guy and Florence (Volz) Staton.
Carol moved to Topeka in 1963 to attend Washburn University and then made Topeka her home.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh G. Greenfield, Jr.; her children, Guy and Jackie Gardner, Lori (Gardner) and Scott Wingfield, Jennifer (JJ) and Jeff Matzek. Carol has seven grandchildren, Anthony Escalante, Emily Gardner, Toby Matzek (Madison), and Brooke Matzek, Makenna, Cody and Nick Wingfield. Other survivors include her stepchildren, Jina and John Hammett, Jodi Tritsch; and eight step-grandchildren, Maddie Tenbrink, Morgan Tritsch, KJ Groves, Korri Groves, Jessica Lutjen, Johnna Klohs, Ryan Hammett, and Luke Hammett; as well as 14 step great-grandchildren; and three step great-great grandchildren. Also surviving include her sister-in-law, Shirley Staton; nieces, Sherri Felder and Stacy Thaxton.
Carol was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Staton; grandson, Drew Threadgill; and stepdaughter, Jan Groves.
During the time Carol was raising her children, she was active in PTO at Hudson Elementary School, Eisenhower School, and Highland Park High School. She was a Girl Scout leader for her daughters while they were in grade school and an officer in the Dornwood Girls Softball League for many years. Carol participated with her husband in the Prairie Trail Riders Club, Good Sam’s Campers Club, and the American Legion Patriot Guard. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
She worked with the Kansas Medical Education Foundation, Shawnee County Coroner’s Office, New York Life Insurance Company, Stanley’s Florist, Dillard’s, and Mommy and Me. In 2000, she started her career with Kirk & Cobb Real Estate and stayed there until her retirement in November of 2015.
Carol’s joy in life came from spending time with and traveling with her beloved husband, Hugh, and watching her grandchildren grow up. She could sit on a sandy beach and watch the ocean waves for hours, all while collecting seashells for which she had no use for at home, but they were her treasures. Her treasures of the heart were her husband, children, grandchildren, family, and friends. She had a smile that brightened everyone's day and made them feel like they mattered. If you were in her life, you were special and you were family.
