Carmen G. Guthrie, 88, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Plaza West Healthcare & Rehab, in Topeka.
She was born November 23, 1937, in Brownsville, Texas. Her parents were Esparanza “Hope” Castro and Roman Fernandez. Carmen attended West High School in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a member of the school choir and, because of her talent and love of singing, was often asked to sing solos during concerts. One of her favorite recording artists was Patsy Cline, and she could often be found singing "Crazy" on car rides.
Carmen had a great business sense and owned many homes in both Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Topeka, Kansas later in life. She loved to travel and would take her family on trips whenever she could. She was fluent in both English and Spanish. Spanish being her first language. She enjoyed singing, dancing, listening to Mexican music, watching game shows, anything with Chuck Norris especially “Walker Texas Ranger”, and Mexican soap operas. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
She also attended church at Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Oakland.
Carmen worked in assembly line production.
She married Delbert Guthrie on April 24, 1998. He died December 11, 2025.
Other survivors include her children, Tom Harral of Raytown, Missouri, Stacy Thowe and husband Glen of Topeka, Tina Harral of Kansas City, Kansas; and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delbert Guthrie; children, Misty Ann Harral, Daniel Gomez, David Gomez, Christopher Gomez, Pedro Gomez; and sister, Grace Villalobos.
The family will receive friends from 4:00pm-6:00pm, with a Rosary prayed at 6:00pm, Sunday, January 18, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11:00am, on Monday, January 19, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, with interment following at Memorial Park Cemetery-Topeka.
Memorial contributions should be made directly to KVC Kansas which provides foster care and adoption services, or the Topeka Rescue Mission.
