Robert H. Counihan, 94, a 60 year resident of Topeka, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2007 at Carriage Square Health Care Facility in St. Joseph, MO.Mr. Counihan was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka as a Coordinator of physical medicine and rehabilitation for many years before he retired in 1973.He was born August 15, 1913 in Bronx, NY the son of Alfred Harold and Dorothy Agnes Carstensen Counihan. Mr. Counihan received a masters degree in physical education from New York University. He was a 1st Lt. in the US Army during WW II serving with Co. B, 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion. Mr. Counihan fought in the Battle of the Bulge along with serving in Normandy, Rhineland and throughout Europe. As a result of his service to his country he received a bronze star.Mr. Counihan was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Capitol Post #1 of the American Legion, Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW, National Association of Federal Employees and a lifetime charter member of the National WW II Memorial. He also was a contributor to the National Archives of WW II veterans.He was married to Norma C. Cook on October 6, 1945 at Ft. Benning, GA. She preceded him in death on August 15, 2003.Survivors include one son, Mike Counihan and his wife Carol of St. Joseph, MO, two grandchildren, Sean Counihan and his wife Jessica of Columbia, MO and Keelin Counihan of Topeka. Two nephews Bob and Jack Counihan also survive. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW. Mr. Counihan will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A parish prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m.Memorial contributions may be made to Most Pure Heart of Mary School.
