Ernest “Ernie” John Horn, age 82, passed away June 26, 2011 at his home with his family after a long battle with cancer.
Ernie was born March 8, 1929 in Victor, IA to Alma Stoker Horn and Philip G. Horn.
He graduated from Victor High School in 1947. Ernie served in the US Navy from August 1947 to February 1950. He married Susan Liston on May 23, 1951 at St. John Vianney Church, Eskridge, KS. They resided in Eskridge until 1995.
Ernie worked for Consumer Sand Co. for 40 yrs and umpired for the girls softball teams at Dornwood for 29 yrs. He worked at Dave’s Repair Shop with his son David for many years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Topeka.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susan Horn, Topeka; daughters, Rose Varvel (Dave), Wamego, Janet Malone, Topeka, Rita Horn, Colorado Springs, CO, Mary Foust (Bill), Columbia, MO, Brenda Sloop, Topeka and sons, David and Tom (Debra) both of Topeka, 11 grandchildren, Brianna Malone Cook, Aaron Malone, Rachel Malone Miller, Caleb Malone, Jeremiah Horn, Lindsey Horn Olsen, Molly O’Quinn, Carter Foust, Ryan and Erika Sloop, Maria Horn and 15 great grandchildren. He is survived by siblings, Melvin and Arnold Horn, Marilyn Beugin and Luetta Peterson all of Iowa. He was preceded in death by a son John P. Horn November 4, 2001 and a sister Lucille Bird.
Ernie was cremated. A parish rosary will be prayed at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, Tuesday, June 27 at 6:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church or Marian Clinic sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66603.
