Frank S. Ortiz, Sr.

June 4, 1946 — March 5, 2017

Frank S. Ortiz, Sr., 70, of Topeka, KS died Sunday March 5, 2017 at his home.  He was born June 4, 1946 in Topeka the son of Felipe and Augustina (Soto) Ortiz.  He was a Marine Corps Veteran serving two tours of duty in Vietnam receiving a Purple Heart, Silver Star and a Good Conduct Medal.   Frank worked for the State of Kansas, Department of Corrections, retiring after 25 years. Frank was a former member of the American GI Forum and the American Legion Post #400.  He married Katherine (Hernandez) Toledo at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, they later divorced. Frank is survived by his children, John (Rhonda) Sokolik, of Paducah, KY, Katherine M. (George Jackson) Sanchez, Delores Pagan, Francisco Soto Ortiz, Jr. all of Topeka, his siblings, Antonio (Dorothy) Ortiz of Whittier, CA, Mary Soto of Dallas, TX, Joe (Virginia) Ortiz of Sacramento, CA, Carmen Martinez of Topeka and Augustine (Sandra) Ortiz of Yuma, AZ. Twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felipe and Augustina, two sons, Francisco and Felipe Ortiz, a brother, Felipe Ortiz, a sister, Esperanza (Hope) Llamas and three great-grandchildren.  Frank will lie in state after 2:00 PM Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM. The family will greet friends following the rosary until 8:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Penwell Gabel Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
