George W. Platt

October 14, 1941 — March 22, 2018

George W. Platt, 76, of Topeka, passed away on March 22, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Ossining, New York on October 14, 1941 the son of Warren Russell and Mary Josephine (Tapp) Platt.

Mr. Platt served four years in the U.S. Air Force stationed at Forbes AFB.

George married Theresa Gorrell at St. Joseph Catholic Church on May 12, 1962. They spent over 55 years together. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Georgia Platt Sparta (Michael ) and Maria Hards (Kevin), of Topeka, three grandchildren, Joshua Platt (Richinda Brower), Josey Garvey, Ocean Sparta (Brian Ngari) and a great granddaughter, Gianna Ngari. He is survived by his siblings, Joseph Platt (Carole) of Wappinger Falls, NY, Clyde Platt (Barbara) of Yorktown, NY, Andre Platt (Donna) of Ossining, NY, Christopher Platt of Peekskill, NY, Marie Ortega of Hallsville, TX and Joan Susan Myers of Mohegan Lake, NY.

George was a Freight Carman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway for 38 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the BNSF Retirees, and a 25 year member of the National Railroad Historical Society. He served as president in both organizations.

George was a member of Sacred Heart/St. Joseph Parish. He enjoyed gardening, photography, and was a handyman.  

He will be most remembered as a giving man with a great work ethic and sense of humor who enjoyed being with his family and especially his grandchildren.  

George will lie in state at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 312 Freeman, on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m.   A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment with military honors will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Joseph Restoration Project, TARC of Shawnee County-Infant and Toddler Services, or Chasing Tails Rescue and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
