Marvin Dean Havenstein

January 29, 1937 — June 18, 2018

Marvin Dean “Sugar Bear” Havenstein, 81, of Topeka, died June 18, 2018. 

He was born January 29, 1937 in Alma, Kansas the son of Carl and Martha (Ringel) Havenstein.  Marvin was a graduate of Wamego High School.

He was a Machinist in the Mechanical Department of Santa Fe Railroad for over 35 years prior to his retirement.  Marvin was a member of I.A.M. & A.W.  LL 378 Machinist Union.

Marvin served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  He served as Past Commander for American Legion Post #400 and currently a member of American Legion Post #421.  He volunteered at the VA Hospital.

He was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church and had been a former member of both the St. Paul’s and St. John’s Lutheran Churches.

He married Doris Marie Miller on September 17, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.  She preceded him in death on February 12, 1995.  He was also predeceased by his companion of many years, Dixie Senne on January 23, 2018.

Survivors include his daughter, Marcelle (Robert) Shrake, his son, Michael (Theresa) Havenstein, grandchildren, Jasper Shrake, Kaylee and Christopher Havenstein, and his siblings, Keith Havenstein, Orwin Havenstein, Shirley Roudybush and Joleen Blankley.

He will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Friday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where his family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.  Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 23rd, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.  Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to American Legion Post #421, Calvary Lutheran Church or the Colmery O’Neil VA Medical Center and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
