Ruth Marie Holmberg

Ruth Marie Holmberg, 97, of Topeka, died September 4, 2018 at the Presbyterian Manor.

She was born in Elmdale, Kansas on May 18, 1921 the daughter of Karl W. and Bertha (Bechelmayr) Stubenhofer.  Ruth was a 1939 graduate of Elmdale Rural High School and attended the American Business College in Wichita, Ks.

She was a bookkeeper for the Farmer’s Union Co-op in Strong City from 1941 to 1944, then worked for the County of in Cottonwood Falls, and retired in 1982 from Santa Fe Railway Company where she worked as a clerk for 20 years.

Ruth was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, the Women’s Club at the church, Santa Fe Old Timers, Bowling leagues, St. Joseph Circle #465 of the Daughters of Isabella in Newton, Ladies of the Moose, VFW Auxiliary #1650, American Legion Post #1 Auxiliary, Transportation Communications Union, and the National Association of Retired Railway Employees.

She married Jack D. Holmberg at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Strong City, Kansas on February 12, 1946.  He preceded her in death on August 15, 2014.  She was also predeceased by a brother, Howard Stubenhofer and a sister, Josephine Grant.

Survivors include a son, Mark D. Holmberg of Orlando, Florida, a daughter, Karla A. Satterlee of Holyoke, Colorado, and a brother, James Stubenhofer of Kansas City.

Ruth will lie in state at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. where a parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Church.  Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Matthew Church sent in care of Brennan Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas  66603.
